You're still my dad even if you hurt me.

I was just talking to some friends about the difficulty I have choosing a Father's Day card, and then I came home to read today's secrets, and I found this. I wish I could talk to this person. I think we could be friends.

I send him a card because I don't want to hurt him, but I also don't want to lie. Even if I was overcome by selflessness and decided to buy him one of those "I'll always be daddy's girl/you made me who I am/I could always look up to you" cards, he wouldn't believe it. He would know I was a phony, and it would probably make him sadder.

You would think the folks at Hallmark would catch on. Some of us don't like our dads, but we need to offer an olive branch, so they know we do care about them. We understand that they did their best even if it was really shitty.

Where are those cards?

Sherry-

I can absolutely relate to this post. Choosing a Dad's day card is difficult for me as well. My relationship with my dad has gotten so much stronger over the years, but I still feel like a fake when I consider those mushy cards. I usually opt for a funny one or one with a more general message.

I think its admirable that you desire to be kind and send him a card even though you are hurt. Maybe you could just get a "thinking about you" type card? I am surprised there aren't more general Father's Day cards out there. Love you, and I'm sorry for sad/awkward days like today.
