Jesus Grandma

It seems that, somehow, each time I talk to my paternal grandmother* (which is admittedly not very often), she manages to bring up Harry Potter. I usually just take my grandma's comments about the satanic nature of the books with a grain of salt. Of course, being an English teacher, I hate censorship and book banning. I also ignore her E-mails about Pepsi "taking God out of their cans" (which I guess I'm not too concerned about because I never realized that you could find God in a Pepsi can). I half-listen to her rants about which politicians I should vote for and I don't give her book recommendations much credit. Whenever we mention my musically talented (but unbelieving) brother-in-law she says, "Oh, I just wish that his music would glorify the Lord.I wish he could sing about Jesus." This is my grandma. We used to call her the "Jesus Grandma," but I think a better title would be "The Christianity-as-my-cause Grandma." She does have a good heart, but her passions are a bit misguided.
*Please note that this is not Nana.

The other day my grandma came to my apartment because she wanted to take me out to dinner for my birthday. I happen to be in the process of reading my very first Harry Potter book. Being the passive-aggressive brat that I am, I left my book out on the ottoman where I was sure that she would notice it. I even had a speech prepared about how I can't fight against something I don't understand. I was going to tell her that I need to have read the book before I can make a stance against it. I was ready to mention something about sensational verses intellectual stances. Then, I was going to tell her that a person can learn more about witchcraft from a "Christian" article fighting against Harry Potter than he can from the actual novel. I was ready to fire.

She didn't even notice the book. :)

hahahahahaha.

i love that you imagine confrontations in your head, too.
they always go so much better there than they do in real life.

I am Christian, and I've read all of the Harry Potter Books. People that are horrified of them and absolutely no idea what they're about.

What do I usually say? "There are plenty of better ways to expend your energy than telling people about the horrors of Rowling's books!"

I realized something....In the Harry Potter series, they celebrate Christmas, but the don't celebrate Haloween???

Jessica,
Ha. Let's just say that this isn't my first imagined confrontation. They almost never (if ever) occur. We all know about my communication issues.

Tmpfroff,
That's what drives me nuts about book banning- it's almost always fueled by ignorance. Don't worry- I had the energy argument ready to fire as well;) I have yet to finish the book, but I'm noticing some True spiritual principles. An interesting place to discover Truth. I wonder what THEY would think!

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan...
I'm pretty sure they celebrate Halloween...I'll look into it and let you know. Anyways, I knew that my ISP leaders didn't approve of them...so I brought the first 3 and re-read them again on the plane ride to Malaysia.
I'm a brat too. ;-)
Love ya and miss ya Sherry!

Yeah, they do celebrate Halloween. But, really, I'm not too concerned:)
