Being a feminist means believing in equality, choice, and in the strength of women. I don't blink an eye before claiming the title "feminist," but that doesn't mean I fit all of the stereotypes.
If I could "stay home" with my daughter and forsake my career, I would do it in a second, but I would never tell someone else that it was what she needed to do. I respect marriages where roles are clearly defined and divided, even though that model would never work for me. I'm delighted when anyone holds the door for me (especially when I'm juggling a stroller)--male or female.
Being a feminist doesn't mean that we all do things the same way; it just means that I will fight for you, as you seek to find your own way. It means I will fight for your voice to be heard, dear rape victim, dear oppressed worker, dear gay student, dear scared mother. I've got you.
By the way, did you know that we're celebrating the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote in California? It's been 100 short years, and I say, "Well done, sister suffragette!"

I have trouble with the world because I believe those same things you do and yet I would never call myself a 'feminist.' Perhaps it's the connotation associated with the word, which seems to be your take also?
But would humanist be better? I mean I believe you care for society's men just as deeply as women right?
I have trouble with the WORD! Whoops...Freudian slip there maybe?
Good to hear from you, Tyler. Women's issues are unique, but it seems that most feminists are also humanists. I'm both, but women's issues are the ones that are dearest to my heart, so I proudly identify with the title "feminist." It's more assumed that, as a caring human being, I am a humanist. Feminism, though, is my passion and part of my unique identity. I know that some argue that women have equal rights and it's time to put the feminist movement to bed, and yet rape jokes are alive and well. Until attitudes that allow the blaming of a rape victims or making light of rape are obliterated (as one example), we need feminists.
