Becoming

I've been thinking about how people change, and how it's always difficult for those they leave behind, whether the change is for the better or for the worse.

We've recently lost a friend because her values and relationships have changed, and it's been so difficult and hurtful to see her leave. We think she's being foolish and rash. We want her to see things from our perspective. We think she's making a very, very big mistake.

But maybe she's happy. Maybe this is who she is--at this point in her life. Maybe this is a necessary season in her life--a part of her process of becoming.

I miss her, but I trust that she's doing what she needs to do and that, some day, she will realize that we love her, we want good things for her, and we'll still be around when she decides to come back.

I just hope it's sooner than later.
