Student 1: Ms. McGowan! Are you teaching summer school!?
Me: Nope! Not this year! I’m doing foster care this summer, so I will be spending most of my time at home.
Student 2: Foster care?! Like you’re going to have a baby!?
Me (while walking to the other side of the classroom): Yes. You sound so surprised.
Student 3: Wait. Foster care? Like for dogs?
Me: Um, no. For human beings. You guys are really shattering my confidence.
Students 1-3: [Various forms of reassurance]
Student 2: So, is it a boy or a girl?
Me: Well, I don’t know.
Student 3: Do you get to pick its name?
Me: They usually come with names, since most of the kids have lived with their birth families for a period of time.
Student 3: What name would you choose if you could? I love the name Miley! Isn’t that so cute?
Me: Like Miley Cyrus? I’m not a big Hannah Montana fan.
Student 3: Whatever. I liked that name before Hannah Montanna.
Student 4: You’re not telling us if it’s a boy or a girl. Tell us this: Do you have a blue crib or a pink crib?
Me: [Laughing] The crib’s white. I really don’t know if I will be taking care of a boy or a girl. The baby might not even be born yet.
Student 4: [Looks confused]
Student 2: If you were to buy clothes for this new baby, where would you shop? [winking at me]
Me: Alright…get back to work.

cute. :)
Did you tell hem you have a red dog bed?
your students are too cute!
i think you're going to be a wonderful foster mother :) (i dont know if thats the correct term, but thats what we're going with).
The rumor by 4th block was that I'm pregnant. Oh, dear.
I don't want to bring the dog bed up because that will, for sure, confuse them :)
Thanks, Gaby; I sure hope so!
That is so funny! That is neat that you are doing foster care - I think that might be something I would do in the future....like way future! When my babies are old enough to not be on my nerves anymore.
Your students are fun :)
