One of my professors told us that (emotionally) teaching must be a one-way street. We can’t expect our students to fulfill our emotional needs. We are to pour our energy into them, without expecting anything in return. She told us that we need to find our emotional fulfillment elsewhere.
In other classes, I was told that teaching was one of the most rewarding professions imaginable. At times, I’m sure that teaching is the most thankless job-- ever. Those are the times when I’m expecting something in return.
This week I heard:
“This is my favorite class and I’m not saying that to kiss up.” Several students agreed.
Some of my students wrote on the board, “I love Ms. McGowan. Your the best.” I reminded them that if they’re going to tell an English teacher, “You’re the best,” it’s important to use the correct word.
From a former student who came to visit: “I had to write an essay in geography and I knew how because of what you taught me! I think it’s good, too! Will you look it over?”
“I felt prepared for my STAR test in language arts, but I was totally confused on the science test.”
A former student came by and, in a very shy voice said, “Hey. I wrote these poems. I thought you might want to see them. I’ve been writing a lot of poetry, lately. I will just leave them here, okay?”
“I actually look forward to coming to this class. It’s not boring.”
“I’m really glad I came to class today. It feels good to laugh.”
I’ve learned not to expect it. But, wow, when I do hear it, it’s sweet.

Wow. Sounds like you are a great teacher. I know that when I was in school I didn't hand those kind of compliments out easily (in fact I still am in school and still don't).
Thanks for putting that first word of advice from your professor. It is good for me to remember that the nights when nobody seems to be into it are the nights I need to be REALLY into what I am teaching.
incredible.
ps. i wanted to beat one of my students over the head with a sand shovel yesterday.
pps. i think i want your students. :-P
