A few days ago, after school, one of my former students and I had the following conversation:
Kid: Hey Ms. McGowan!! Do you mind if I sit in here and do my homework?
Me: Not at all.
Kid: Who's reading Lord of the Flies?
Me: My sophomore classes.
Kid: You have sophomores!? Woah. Congratulations! [I'm not sure why congraulations are in order] Are you going to teach sophomores next year?
Me: Yeah. Probably.
Kid: So...I could have you again for English next year?
Me: It's a possibility. Oh man, I'm not sure that I could handle another semester as your teacher. [insert kind, I'm-just-kidding smile]
Kid: Oh my gosh! That would be hecka cool! It would be like Mr. Feeney. I always wanted a teacher like that! Can I start calling you "Sherry" now?
Me: Of course not.
Kid: When I graduate?
Me: College, maybe.
One of my favorite parts of teaching is when my old students come back to visit. There's something about a visit that says, "I like you and you were important to me." Sigh.

You're so cute, Sherry :) I hope to see you in teaching action someday. You're a great friend.
Love you,
Stephanie
That's a great story Sherry,
I remember when I graduated college, I went back to my High School to volunteer and visited with my old physics teacher. I was able to shake his hand and call him "Jim". In an alternate dimension, I'm sure that I ended up as a teacher :)
Reading this conversation warmed my heart. I will have to wait a very long time for my kids to graduate college and call me by my first name :-D. But hey, we're just happy they can call me "Ms. M". Maybe we'll work on the rest later.
