If you have not read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, you must. It is a striking story about what it means to be a part of the human race. Now...saunter on down to your local library or Barnes & Noble and get yourself a copy!

I read it a while back. I enjoyed it, although I thought it was a bit predictable near the end.
It's so humbling to realize how some people live outside of our safe little bubble here in the US.
Tmproff,
I agree that it's predictable. For some reason, I liked that. I was thrilled.
In our district, the freshman/sophomore (the classes that I teach) core literature is bleaker than bleak. This book, despite its undeniably bleak moments, had redeeming qualities. Perhaps I was thirsting for that after a semester filled with tragedies.
I wanted to know that, in the reality of man's inhumanity to man, there is, somewhere, a glimmer of hope. Amidst my tears (this is the first book in a while that has brought me to genuine tears), I sensed that beautiful hope.
I thought it had some great parts in it. The end where he goes back and saves the little boy I really enjoyed. I can't say it had a happy ending, but you could see future happiness in the end of the book.
If you have some time, pickup "The Singer" by Calvin Miller. One of the best books I read in 2005 and brought me to tears in the middle of a restaurant during lunch.
I will add it to my list! Thanks for the recommendation.
