Erasers and spunk

The first week of school has passed and, so far so good. I have a few feisty students, but I’m feisty, too; I’m up to the challenge. Student teaching is definitely "the man’s" method of weeding out the weak teachers. Having my own classroom far surpasses the necessary evil "they" call "student teaching." I go to work each day in great anticipation of what the day holds. Every morning, I get an excited feeling in my stomach. It’s amazing to be in such a dynamic profession. The ridiculous amount of work and the hours of "overtime" are more than worth it.

If you really want to know, the real reason I’m a teacher is because they let me keep a full box of brand new pencils and lots of sticky notes in my desk. We like school supplies. I get to take whatever I want from the English department office. I feel guilty- kind of like I’m stealing, so I only take a few things at a time. Then, I get back to my classroom and just look at my desk drawer full of NEW supplies. They even smell good.

Tyler, Do you get an endless supply of new school supplies where you will be teaching?

Way to go Sherry. I'm sure you are a great teacher. Tell your students to be nice to their substitutes:)

I must say the supplies are not endless and I have to find most of my own. It makes for some good Vietnamese practice however.

I love school supplies. I still find myself wandering through the school supply section every fall even though I no longer have school for which to buy supplies. It's just so fun, makes me think of You've Got Mail and how much I would actually like a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils. :)

Mark,

I , too, have been a substitute teacher:) When I had to get a sub for Amy's wedding this summer, I made my kids swear up and down that they would treat the sub with way more respect than they treat me:) The sub left a wonderful note, so I think I'm doing my part for the subs of the world.

Our supplies are not endless, either. I make many trips to Target. My first check can't come too soon. I can't imagine trying to teach without Target nearby, Tyler:)

Ha. Student teaching better not weed me out, or I'll punch it in the face.
